The Same Issues
I held a practice counseling session yesterday with one of my co-workers as part of a school assignment due soon. I don't want to divulge the details, because it's supposed to confidential, but my co-worker is a religious Christian woman and it was really interesting to hear how her struggles with her religion are so similar to my own and many others I know within Orthodox Judaism. What I also found interesting is how much more ineffective I feel when the person I am counseling has struggles similar to my own - when I am dealing with the same situation as the person I am counseling, I feel very little insight and dont' feel like I am very helpful. It's something I hope to conquer with more experience.

Dont worry, Im sure you will. If its any consolation, you always help me.
I understand what you mean...somehow I think thats more of a postive thing. Its easier to relate to these feelings and alot of the times some counsellors, the lousy ones, show a lack of empathy. In certain situations you have to experience them to know what the person is going through. Sometimes you have solutions because you have personally tackled the same problem. Sometimes answers and solutions are not always neccessary but just the possibility to relate and show empathy is a great contribution to counselling. Somethings need to be experienced and cant be really felt through reading a book(depending on the person of course). I am sure you are doing a good job!

Thank you, I am glad I can help.

Thanks for the encouragement. I suppose it does help a person who is struggling to know that others have gone through the same things.
