Nose Piercing
I was in the mall today and I saw a sign advertising ear piercing. I told my friend that I was with that I was thinking that my next adventure for when I get bored should be getting my nose pierced. She told me I wasn't allowed to, that it's not cool. Let's vote - is she no fun, or does she have a good point?

She´s no fun! I have had a nose piering for 6 years now and dont regret it....its a cool thing to do! If you feel like it, go for it! It does add a feature to your face...and a twinkle if so desired. :-)
I don't know. I have really bad allergies so I'm always stuck imagining what would happen with a really forceful sneeze. It could get ugly. Aren't eyebrow piercings and other more exotic decorations the cool thing now anyway?

Did it hurt very much? Glad to know I have an ally :)

Thank G-d, I don't have the allergy problem. And I actually have no desire to pierce my eyebrow, I just think a little stud in my nose could add some excitement.
I don't think it's cool, but that's just my personal opinion.
Well it specifiaclly says that Rivkah received a nose ring as gift from> Eliezer in the Torah, yet today it's considered 'prost' so I don't think it's such a good idea, besides in my opinon pierced people look ridiculous.
You definately have my full support on getting it done...managed to even get my mom and sister to do it so now all us gals are nose pierced.I am quiet attached to my piercing.A nose piercing is in my opinion the classiest. It didnt hurt much, but you feel the sting...and its worth it!! :-)
She's definitely no fun, but I tend to agree that it's not the best idea. I mean, when would you wear it? To work it's not appropriate, on Shabbos and on dates it's *really* not appropriate, so why bother?
But you know what, I guess I'm the kind of person who is no fun too because I am against doing anything to your body that is permanent and cannot be undone.

Thanks for your opinion.

Good to know that I have precedent! I'm not sure what "prost" means.

You got your mom to get her nose pierced? Cool!

I would not have a problem at work, my office is super casual and doesn't have issues with that kind of thing (it's actually tame compared to some of what you see here). As for Shabbos and dates, I would have to see if I wanted to wear it then or not...And I have certainly done enough other things to my body - this would at least not be permanent.
Maybe you dont want to hear this, but arent you 28, not 16.
Also, where would you wear it in your neighborhood, at Shul, in the city. You need to be cognizant of the fact that whereever you are someone could be looking at you and thinking about you they could introduce to.
And, B'ezras Hashem, you will get married soon. You cant exactly go the Mikva with that in your nose..
I hope you realize that I am only saying this out of love..

I would hope if someone saw me with a nose ring they would introduce me to someone who wouldn't have a problem with it, which is the kind of guy I am looking for.
Sorry I didn't realize you didn't know this word
Prost is a general Yiddish term to indicate soemthing that looks cheap, wild, not very jewish liek...
No opinion one way or another, but the one time I witnessed someone getting her nose pierced, she developed an infection and looked like a total fool until it went away.
Moral of the story: If you go for it, make sure they autoclave their instruments (and don't get piercings overseas).

Thanks for the clarification.

I would never get pierced anywhere that didn't take major precautions to use sterile instruments.
To everyone who commented -
Thank you for weighing in on this. I appreciate everyone's opinions. They certaily vary. I have decided to NOT pierce my nose, not because it's socially unacceptable, but because I received information that it can cause a permanent mark, even when removed. And I like my nose the way it is :)
