"Whatcha Thinkin?"
It is so not true that it's the women who ask, "What are you thinking?" I might be guilty of having said it on occasion, but I definitely don't think it's a habit, and there are a number of guys who have asked me it. And by the way, it is annoying, I can understand why people complain about it.

I think this can be more of an introvert-extrovert thing than a male-female thing. I'm a somewhat extroverted guy - I like verbalizing and discussing what's on my mind. And when I've been in relationships with more introverted girls, I've found myself often being the one to ask "what are you thinking?"

That's an interesting observation. I'm on the introverted side, so I guess it's possible that's why the question usually comes from guys to me.
I also have never asked anyone that and I have been asked that by guys. But I don't think it's a gender issue -- it's a power issue. The person who feels like they are the "weaker" member of the pair will ask this question. And we've obviously just hung around way too many weak men. :(
