Calling Card

I think people don't realize that their writing style is often their calling card. Along with the fact that each person has a different "voice" in their writing, punctuation, grammar, capitalization and other things makes people almost as recognizable as if they were speaking to you. Shifra wrote about this recently. Being someone who enjoys writing and reading, and who really appreciates style in writing (and is quite jealous of those with eloquent and elegant "voices" in their writing), I usually can recognize someone prettty quickly by their writing style and quirks, whether they want me to or not. There have been more than one occasion when someone has commented "anonymously" on this blog, or sent me e-mails that they apparently didn't want their names associated with. I'm usually too nice to say it directly, but I know who these anonymous commentors are. My words of advice are - if you are too embarrassed or don't feel like whatever comment or e-mail you are sending lives up to using your real name, please don't. Hope that's clear enough.

You're bluffing.

Anon -

I am not bluffing and you're not the person I'm talking about, your punctuation and spelling is way too good ;)

Oh, and P.S. - Besides writing style, which is quite distinctive, I have other tricks up my sleeve to identify people.

That's why I don't even bother. If I don't want what I'm saying to identify me... I just don't say it. Sometimes I'll write an email to the person privately instead, though.

(Nu, guess who?! :) ) [I think I've made it plenty obvious.]

Any blogger who writes anonymously in a comment on SerandEz I think I've been able to tell. Other anons are harder, because I don't see their writing enough, but I can still figure out a good chunk... One friend was surprised I figured out it was him so quickly - but that was easy: How many Bears fans do I know who use the Internet? :)
