Sharing the Fun
My classmate who I have become friends with gave herself highlights over the weekend. She said I was the inspiration for such a feat. I was happy to see that they turned out well and she said she enjoyed the process.
On a related note (kind of), I think one of the annoying things about being a woman is the maintenance. It's not that you can just get your eyebrows done once and it's over - you have to keep getting them done every couple weeks. And you have to put a little effort into maintaining them between sessions. You have to keep your nails polished on a regular basis. If you put highlights in your hair, you have to continue to touch up the roots. It's a neverending process. Or I guess we could just choose not to do anything. But really, that would be too easy.

I never do anything. I don't wear make-up, I don't get my hair (except on the occasional lark) or nails or eyebrows done, and I hardly ever get new clothes -- and I look perfectly presentable. Of course, presentable is the keyword here. What I don't look is gorgeous or sophisticated or trendy, but I'm okay with it.
Frankly, the world would be a better place if more people had this attitude. There'd be less anorexia, bulimia, cosmetic surgery, Botox, and control-top pantyhose. :)
What are you complaining about, Shani. I paid 20$ for a beautiful manicure and got a perfect shade of polish. Then the mikva lady removed the polish and clipped off all my nails down to the quip. Then said to me, "say thank you to your nails for letting me do a mitzva with you".
I came home and my fingers look ugly. I hate it.
When I was single I always had an impeccable french manicure with tips. Now I have to wait, maybe when I am expecting I can get a nice manicure again.

I hear what you are saying, and am fairly low maintenance myself. But I have to admit that putting on some make-up, getting my eyebrows done, and having a great hair-cut all definitely add to my self-esteem and confidence. I feel like I look good, and it makes me feel good. And if that doesn't interfere with my living life in a normal manner, I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I don't think you have to go crazy to look nice, but sometimes it takes a little effort.

I don't usually spend so much on a manicure, preferring to do my nails myself, but I can understand how it could be frustrating to have to adjust to not having something that you are used to. I guess we each need to appreciate the positive aspects of our individual stages of life.
