My Office

One of my co-workers came in to my office the last couple days wearing khakis and polo shirts. Everyone around was shocked - we kept asking him what was going on, how come he is so dressed up? Does he have an interview planned for after work? And then I realized how funny it is that, in Manhattan, someone wearing khakis is considered dressed up. Yet another reason I like this office.

More Way Weirdness

I was showing my co-worker the dancing girl because I wanted to see if we could look at it at the same time and see her turning in different directions. Yup. So then, he showed me this one:

Count the number of passes in this video and see if you notice anything weird about it. If you do, leave a comment, and I will reveal the secret eventually :)

LOTD

It's been a while, but today's LOTD is an old song that was made kinda new, but a long time ago, so I suppose it's still old.

Ramble On
(Train's Version)

Leaves are falling all around
It's time I was on my way
Thanks to you I'm much obliged
Such a pleaseant stay
But now it's time for me to go
The autum moon lights my way.
and now I smell the rain
and and with it pain
and it's headed my way
ah sometimes I grow so tired
but I know I got one thing I got to do
ramble on
well nows the time the time is now
sing my song
I'm go'in around the world
gonna find my girl
I'm on my way
I've been this way ten years to the day
I'm gonna ramble on
I'm gonna find the queen of all my dreams
Got no time for spreadin' roots
The time has come to be gone
No I can't be dragged a thousand times
It's time to ramble on
When I'm alone
Oh well nows the time
The time is now
Sing my song
I'm going around the world
Gonna find my girl
I'm on my way
I've been this way ten years to the day
I'm gonna ramble on
I'm gonna find the queen of all my dreams
Nows the time it can be told
My freedom I hold dear
But years ago
In days of old
The magic filled the air
But in the darkest steps of Mordor
I met a girl so fair
But go up to her I run
courage up and slipped away with her
ah shit
and there's nothing I can do now
I guess I'll keep on
Ramblin' on
I'm gonna sing my song
I'm going around the world
Gonna find my girl
I'm on my way
I've been this way ten years to the day
I'm gonna ramble on
Sing my song
I'm going around the world
I wanna see my girl
I went searching for my baby
my my my my my baby

And here's a link to the video (it wouldn't let me embed it).

Yuck

Is it just me or is Grey's Anatomy getting way gruesome? Besides the fact that I am starting to not like the characters so much, the medical stuff is getting a little too real for me. Shudder.

Illustration of my Wacky Office

Co-worker 1 (while dealing with a crazy client): I need a miracle.
Co-worker 2: I have some extra miracles stored up - what do you need?
Me: Really? You have extra miracles? Will you make it so I can fly?
Co-worker 2: That's not a miracle, that's a super power. Miracles are possible. Super powers are not.
Me: I don't agree. I miracle should be able to enable a super power. I want to fly.
Co-worker 1: You want to what?
Me: To fly. You know, in the sky. Like with wings.
Co-worker 1: How would you feel if you had wings, and when you walked around between people, your wings were always bumping into them
Me: Duh. If I had wings, I wouldn't be walking around between people, I would be flying above them.

Lots of laughter ensued. TGIF.

Oh, and kinda but not really related at all, how come they didn't call me to be part of this one?

Way Weird

A friend told me about this optical illusion, which supposedly tells you which part of your brain is dominant. Problem is, when I look at it, it keeps switching directions. I can't decide whether the illusion is defective or if I am. Which way does the dancer go for you?

Kindness Happens

Just because I don't post very much anymore does not mean that Kindness Happens should cease to exist. Don't forget to send me your stories of kindness that happens during your day, or let me know if you want to be a contributor. Here is my latest story.

Postcard of the Week

This postcard from Post Secret made me laugh this week. Enjoy!

Return of the IT Pro

Woo hoo! I managed to get a new computer up and running, even accessing the network and a network printer. I have no idea if I did it right or not, but for now, it works. Yay :)

Honors Society?

I got an invitation to join some Honor Society (which I usually don't take as such an honor, because I really think they are just money-making organizations). But this one came with the elusive distinction of being "the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective" honor society. I thought about that for a moment, and started to wonder - how could they be both the largest AND the most selective? Not sure I want to be a part of an Honors Society who thinks those are not mutually exclusive...

RSVP

Is it just me who doesn't really know the correct way to fill in a response card to a wedding?

"Will _____ attend"

Ok, so if I'm not attending, I understand what to do, I just fill in a "not." Easy enough. But if I am attending, what then? Do I circle the "will"? Do I fill in the number of people on the line? Is this some Emily Post type thing that I missed by not going to finishing school or whatever it is that they used to subject women to? Help.

Lucky Me

Who's jealous that I have a Private Practice star look-alike for a co-worker? I didn't realize it until today (because he works out in the field and I only see him once in a while), but yep, he's got the dimples.

So Annoying

The water cooler in my office has been refusing to slake the thirsts of those in my office for the past three weeks. No water will come out, at all. I have been calling the company that sold us our water cooler since it broke. First they were closed for the entire week of Sukkot. So I left a message. Since then, I have left three additional messages with a message service requesting a call back. Nope. When I requested an email address to contact them, I was hung up on. I was supposedly transferred to an actual person's voice mail. Nope, didn't work. I don't understand why they will not accept my money to come fix our water cooler, which will probably take them about three minutes to do. Ugh :(

Update - After throwing a [minor] tantrum on the phone and emailing every email address I could find on the website, I got a call back and they are coming to fix the water cooler. I guess the squeaky wheel does get the grease.

Update again - We have water! Yay!

So Lucky

Every time I go to my internship, I realize how lucky I am for so many things that I never really even thought about:

- That I didn't have a kid while in middle school or high school.
- That I always had money to pay for my lunch.
- That I lived with my parents, and not in some youth center.
- That I wasn't homeless.
- That I had never been in jail, and was not forced to wear an ankle band that tracked my movements.
- That it didn't take me five or more years to graduate high school.

These are just a few of the things that I have seen in just a few weeks of my internship. And the things above don't seem to be uncommon there. I'm so lucky.

Vindicated

I no longer feel completely incompetent because I couldn't get my co-worker's computer networked. It has taken two (not just one) computer professionals quite some time already and they have no yet completely gotten the computer up and running. I know it's a little mean (and I'm hoping desperately that it's not due to anything I did yesterday) but I feel a little better knowing that it wasn't just an easy, quick fix.

LOTD

Today's LOTD is from Incubus:

I Miss You

To see you when I wake up
Is a gift I didn't think could be real.
To know that you feel the same as I do
Is a three-fold, Utopian dream.

You do something to me that I can't explain.
So would I be out of line if I said "I miss you"?

I see your picture.
I smell your skin on
The empty pillow next to mine.
You have only been gone ten days,
But already I'm wasting away.
I know I'll see you again
Whether far or soon.
But I need you to know that I care,
And I miss you.

And here's the video (worth watching because the music is really pretty):

Computer Expert Strikes Again

I wish. Once again, I am being called upon in my office to be the computer expert, this time in the form of a network administrator, or something like that. Except I know virtually nothing about networks, so I am being completely incapable of setting up a new computer on our network. If anyone knows how to do this kind of thing, kindly email me.

Dating Perils

A friend told me about this article, which is a fascinating account of Muslim dating. Fascinating because, if you substitute the Arabic words, the article could easily have been written by a single Orthodox Jewish woman. It reminds me a lot of the discussions I used to have with a Muslim classmate in undergrad when we would compare and contrast a lot of our customs. Check it out.

More Annoyance

I must have some kind of magnet for annoying noises. The construction crew next door seems to be taking a break today but in its place, there is now a nice drilling sound coming from directly below my desk. Ahhh, New York.

It's Official

I am now addicted not only to Grey's Anatomy, but it's spin-off, Private Practice. I can no longer say that I only watch one TV show. But hopefully, it will stop here.

Bang Bang Bang....

Back in April, I offered anyone a lot of money to take care of this for me. It's now back with a vengeance. I am now offering anyone their choice of one of my limbs or organs, along with some M&Ms, if you will just make the noise go away. I hate progress.

Random Emails

Sometimes I get emails that are just so out of the blue I almost fall of whatever I'm sitting on when I receive them. Sometimes I'm happy to hear from the person, sometimes I don't want to and sometimes I'm just really surprised. Yep, tonight was surprised. I wonder if people feel that way about my emails sometimes.
